Annapurna Sanctuary trek: A Deep Walk Into the Heart of the Himalayas

The 13-day Annapurna Sanctuary trek takes you from the lowland warmth of Pokhara to the natural amphitheater surrounded by the highest peaks in the world, at 4130 meters. A few places on earth have taken my breath away quite like the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. It's a journey through culture, nature, and some of Nepal's most majestic mountain views.

The adventure begins in Dhampus, a beautiful Gurung village in the hills. This is your first authentic taste of the Annapurna mountains, with jaw-dropping views of Annapurna South, Fishtail, Machapuchre, Dhaulagiri, and Hiunchuli. The light in a golden shade during sunrise and sunset is something we cannot forget.

After taking stunning views and photos of a Gurung village, Dhampus, we move on to Landruk. From Landruk, you can see and take pictures of beautiful sunsets over Machhapuchhre, also known as Fishtail, and Mountain Hiunchuli.

From Landruk, the trail goes through Chomrong and the beautiful forest trails of the Himalayas. During the trek, you pass by some beautiful teahouses, rhododendron forests, and dramatic landscapes, and you get warm smiles from locals as you pass by.

As you climb higher, you will reach Machapuchhre Base Camp (MBC), a resting point just before the final trek.

From Machhapuchhre Base Camp, you can enjoy the beautiful views of Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna II, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and Gandharvachuli. Below are some of the photos that we took with our client at MBC:

And then comes the summit, Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). Spending a night here, surrounded by peaks rising above 7000 and 8000 meters, is an experience that leaves you humbled and inspired. You will witness sunrises and sunsets in the heart of the Himalayas.

From Annapurna Base Camp, you can enjoy and take photos of the beautiful views of Mount Hiunchuli Peak, which is 6,441 meters or 21,132 feet high above sea level.

Additionally, you can explore Annapurna South (7,647 meters high above sea level), Annapurna Fang (7,647 meters), Annapurna I (8,091 meters), Fluted Peak (6,499 meters), Tent Peak (5,663m), Glacial Dome (7,202m) Gangapurna (7,455m), Annapurna III(7,555m), Gandharva Chuli (6,248m) and Machhapuchare (6,993m).

Surprisingly, you will spend a night at a hotel at Annapurna Base Camp, which gives you the extra day to enjoy sunrise and take stunning photos as a memory of the Himalayas. After spending a night at Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), the journey back begins. The next day’s trek takes you through the Himalaya and Dovan villages, leading to Bamboo.

On the seventh day of your adventure, you will arrive at Jhino Danda, where you can relax and recharge your energy in the riverside natural hot springs. You’ll stay overnight at Jhino Danda, and the following morning, you’ll trek to Ghandruk Phedi, where you’ll catch local transport to Pokhara. After spending a night there, you will return to Kathmandu the next day.

History of Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

The Annapurna Sanctuary is a high-altitude glacial basin 40 km north of Pokhara, Nepal. It is over 4,000 meters high and is ringed by the Annapurna mountain range, which includes peaks surpassing 7,000 meters. The Modi Khola River drains the basin, accessible only via a narrow valley between Hiunchuli and Machapuchare.

Its geography creates stark climatic contrasts: lush tropical forests thrive on south-facing slopes, while north-facing areas, in a rain shadow, resemble Tibet’s arid plateau. Enclosed by towering peaks, the Sanctuary receives just seven hours of daily sunlight in summer.

Sacred to the Gurung people, the area was historically believed to house deities, treasures, and serpent-gods. Machapuchare, a holy peak, was revered as Shiva’s abode, and strict prohibitions barred meat, eggs, women, and lower-caste individuals.

British explorer Jimmy Roberts first reached the Sanctuary in 1956, opening it to exploration. Today, it is part of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, which limits tourism and regulates resources to protect its fragile ecosystem while honoring its cultural legacy.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Altitude: How High is Annapurna Sanctuary Trek from the Sea Level?

The most unforgettable part of the Annapurna Sanctuary trek is how the altitude gradually lifts you from the peaceful hill village to the heart of the towering Amphitheater of the Himalayas. Over 13 days, you will experience a wide range of elevations, each with its scenery, climate, and rhythm.

Your journey begins in the Dhampus Phedi at 1130 meters, a lush starting point surrounded by forest and terraced fields. As you pass through culturally rich villages like Landruk and Chhomrong, you will slowly gain elevation from here, eventually moving into a more incredible place.

The trek’s highest and most celebrated point is Annapurna Base Camp, at 4,130 meters. It is located deep in the Annapurna Sanctuary and surrounded by a stunning 360-degree panorama of peaks, including Annapurna I (8,091 meters), Machapuchre (6,993 meters), and Hiunchuli.

As you embark on a 13-day trek of the Annapurna Sanctuary, you will start your journey from Dhampus Phedi, around 1130 meters. The air is warm, the forest is lush green, and the view is stunning.

The elevation gain during the trek to Annapurna Sanctuary is not much compared to Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit. After serving thousands of climbers, hikers, and trekkers, the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is complicated. An average human with a good guide can easily enjoy this trek.

Typical day during the 13 Days Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

Each day on an Annapurna Sanctuary Trek follows a comforting, rewarding rhythm. You will wake up early to peaceful mountain views and a warm breakfast. Porridge, tea, or eggs are the most popular high-energy breakfasts around  7:30 and 8:00 AM. The trail takes you through forests, charming villages, and terraced fields with stunning views of peaks like Machapuchey and Annapurna South.

Around midday, you will stop at a local teahouse for a filling lunch and rest. Afternoons are usually quieter, with a few hours of walking before you reach the destination for the night, typically by 3- 4 PM. Once there, you will relax, freshen up, and enjoy a cozy dinner around a warm fire. You can chat with a fellow trekker if you want to, or tuck yourself in and sleep early to prepare for another adventurous day.

Why do the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek?

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is one of Nepal’s most rewarding adventures. It perfectly blends breathtaking Himalayan views, rich culture, and natural beauty. The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Itinerary offers beauty and meaning in every step. It is a must-do trek for those seeking adventure and connection.

Clients Reviews

  • Only the best

This was my first hiking trip in Nepal and I was so glad to have Raju and Emmanuel as our guide and the other team members as porters. It was worry-free, and everything was handled flawlessly and professionally. Communication with Raju was also seamless and he is quick to respond. We had briefings every night for the next day.

Safety was prioritised throughout the trip. During the hike both the guides and porters ensured that we were safe, helped us in crossing streams and choosing a safer path to take. They have great commitment to their work and service. It was exemplified by settling us into our meals, taking care of members who were unwell, accompanying the last person. They went above and beyond what was expected.

It was also exceptionally fun to have them accompany us. From listening to Nepali and Hindi songs, to playing cards, and having felt like a superstar as we had a photographer/ videographer digitise our trip. The whole team worked well together and their spirits were high. It lifted us up during steep sections!

They made the whole trip so memorable and fun. I would definitely recommend them and have them on my trip next time!

Useful Information

Picking the right time for you can truly enhance your entire experience. The Annapurna Sanctuary trek is open all year round. However, certain times are considered best and worst for the trek. To make it easier, we have mentioned the best and most challenging seasons for trekking to Annapurna Base Camp.

Annapurna Sanctuary Weather: Which season is best for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek?

Knowing the right time to go on the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek can truly upgrade your trekking experience. Choosing the ideal season ensures better weather, safer trails, and breathtaking views of the Himalayas, all of which are included in the 13-day itinerary and trek package.

Why Spring is Best to Trek Annapurna Sanctuary?

Spring is one of the most popular times to trek in the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek in Nepal. The forest comes alive with vibrant rhododendron blooms, clear skies, and pleasantly warm temperatures. You will enjoy spectacular views of snow-capped peaks and a refreshing natural vibe that is perfect for photography.

Autumn: A Perfect Time to Encounter the Clear Himalayan Glimpse

Autumn is also considered one of the best seasons to trek in the Annapurna Sanctuary. The weather is dry and stable, with crisp mountain air and clear skies revealing jaw-dropping views of Annapurna I, Machapuchre, and more. The trails are in excellent condition, and the festive atmosphere with local celebrations adds a cultural flavor to the Hike.

How about Monsoon and Winter?

While trekking is possible during the monsoon and winter, it's best suited for more experienced hikers. The monsoon brings heavy rain, slippery trails, and limited views. Winter can mean snow-covered paths and freezing temperatures. However, for those who are seeking solitude, off-season trekking can lower the cost of the Annapurna Sanctuary and offer a quieter journey. It is better to consult with your guide.

You will be hiking for an average of 6-12 km daily through changing terrain, from lush forests and river valleys to steep staircases and alpine landscapes.

Some parts of the trail, especially around Chhomrong and Machapuchrey base camp, can be challenging due to their steep climbs and descents. The highest point in the Trek is Annapurna Base Camp, 4,130 meters, so proper acclimatization is essential. The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek itinerary is designed to help you gradually adjust to the elevation.

Whether you are doing the Annapurna Sanctuary trek for 13 days or a shorter version, this soothing moment is something worth remembering.

What Permits are Required for Annapurna Sanctuary?

Before starting the Annapurna Sanctuary trek, ensure you have the essential permits: The TIMS card and the ACAP Permit.

  • An ACAP Permit (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit): It is essential for entering the Annapurna Conservation Area, supporting conservation efforts, and maintaining infrastructure. It costs NPR3000 for foreigners and NPR1000 for SAARC country nationals, including India.

These permits help support conservation work, maintain trails, and keep trekkers safe by tracking their routes.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water daily, even though you aren't thirsty.
  • Respect local culture and costumes: A small gesture can go a long way.
  • Bring a water purification method: Clean water is vital, and it is not always possible to buy it on the trail.
  • Be flexible and open-minded: The mountains can be unpredictable, but magical at the same time.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking: They will always slow down your acclimatization.
  • Walk at a steady pace: This is your journey, so understand your body and walk at your own pace.
