  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Sleep Elevation:3,540 m
  • Overnight Place:Manang

On this day, you can take a short hike to the Chhonkar viewpoint. It takes 2-3 hours, round-trip after breakfast, for your body to acclimate to the altitude gain. You will gradually ascend through juniper bushes and yak pastures. There are also stone chortens along the route to the viewpoint. The Chhonkar viewpoint offers an eye-catching view of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Chulu, and Gangapurna Lake. After spending some time at the viewpoint, you will descend back to Manang.

Alternatively, you can do an Ice Lake hike, which takes 6-7 hours. For Ice Lake, you should start as early as possible, as it is far from Manang. The trekking route goes through an isolated area with no tea shop along the way. It is best to take a packed lunch. The Ice Lake trail leads you through a narrow, steep uphill section to the lake and a steep descent on the way back. You will traverse isolated alpine meadows and open hillsides. Though the route is challenging, it is fully rewarding. The Ice Lake sits in an alpine bowl. It offers one of the most magnificent vistas of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Chulu Peak. You can also see the stunning Gangapurna Glacier. After the acclimatization hike, you will return to Manang and rest at the same lodge, with meals included.

  • Trek Distance:14 km
  • Trek Duration:6-7 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:4,150 m
  • Overnight Place:Tilicho Base Camp
  • Day's Difficulty:Challenging

Today, you will leave Manang and head towards Tilicho Base Camp after breakfast. Exiting Manang, you will gradually ascend on the Short Annapurna Circuit with the Tilicho Lake Trek trail. It takes you through yak pastures and juniper bushes. Similarly, you can see the strong influence of Tibetan Buddhism as you pass through Khangsar (the origin of the Sherpa settlement). There are also ancient mani walls along the route, and you can see the views of Gangapurna Glacier and Tilicho Peak at the skyline. From Khangsar, the trail gets narrower and rougher. It also becomes more isolated as you move forward on the loose gravel and exposed sections of the trail.

After trekking for a while, you will reach Siri Kharka (lunch place) village. The hike becomes more challenging from here. You will need to climb uphill over steep scree slopes and pass through landslide-prone areas. It requires careful footing and steady pacing. You also need to strictly follow the guide instructions as the risk of falling is high. Now that you are in a barren area, you need to be more careful and walk patiently. If you ascend rapidly, the lack of oxygen can increase your risk of altitude sickness. After overcoming these challenging sections, you will finally reach Tilicho Base Camp. The base camp lies right below massive rock walls, and towering cliffs and hanging valleys surround it. You will spend the night here.

Included activities:

  • Traverse past Khangsar, the origin of the Sherpa settlement.
  • Trek past rocky slopes, exposed ridges, and cross landslide-prone sections and high-altitude terrain.
  • Leave the busy Annapurna Circuit Trek trail and enter the remote Tilicho Lake region.
  • Stay overnight at Tilicho Base Camp and enjoy dramatic views of the surrounding landscape.
Day7
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Trek Distance:16 km
  • Trek Duration:8 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:4,080 m
  • Overnight Place:Siri Kharka
  • Day's Difficulty:Challenging

An exciting day awaits us today as we will finally ascend to one of the world’s highest lakes, Tilicho. You will start early in the dark, around 3:30 AM, to avoid the strong winds during the day. The Tilicho Lake (4,919 m) trail slowly climbs uphill on narrow, scree-covered slopes and rocky moraines. As you go higher, the air becomes thinner, and the landscape turns glacial. Make sure to carry enough drinking water, as there are no teahouses along the trail. One of the most challenging sections of the hike is the famous “21 ghumti” (switchbacks), where the steep ascent really tests your stamina.

After about 4 and a half hours of steady ascent, you will reach the beautiful Tilicho Lake. The hike is struggling and challenging, but it is 100 percent rewarding. In addition to the turquoise lake, you can witness the mesmerizing sunrise. The splendid massif of Tilicho Peak next to you and gorgeous Tilicho Lake are mind-blowing.

After reaching Tilicho Lake, you will spend half an hour enjoying the views and taking photos. There is a small tea shop near the lake where we can rest, take photos, and enjoy the views. After spending some time at the lake, we descend back to Tilicho Base Camp, enjoying wide mountain views and dramatic landscapes along the way. It is usually very cold and windy near the lake, so proper warm and windproof gear is essential. Once back at base camp, we take a short break, have lunch, and then continue on the same trail toward Siri Kharka, carefully crossing landslide-prone sections. You will once again trek through a high-altitude valley, passing by green pastures and alpine grasslands. As you descend, oxygen levels increase, and you will feel more comfortable. Siri Kharka is a small, quiet settlement where you will spend the night, with meals included.

Included activities:

  • Early morning hike to Tilicho Lake, one of the world’s highest lakes.
  • Trek on narrow trails while navigating rocky moraines and slopes.
  • Experience the complete change of landscape from alpine terrain to high-altitude terrain in a single day.
  • Retrace your steps to Siri Kharka and stay overnight in this quiet, small settlement.
Day8
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Trek Distance:10 km
  • Trek Duration:5-6 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:4,200 m
  • Overnight Place:Ledar
  • Day's Difficulty:Moderate to challenging

Today, we start our trek early in the morning after breakfast. The trail follows a gentle path through alpine bushes, with wide views of the Manang Valley and surrounding mountains. The fresh air and open landscape make this walk pleasant and relaxing. After about one hour, we reach Upper Khangsar. This area is known for wildlife, and with some luck, we may spot mountain goats or blue sheep. There is also a large yak farm here, so we can have a closer look at local mountain life.

From this point, the trail continues gradually uphill to a viewpoint that offers one of the best panoramic views of the Manang Valley. After spending some time enjoying the views, we descend steeply toward the Marshyangdi River. From the river, the trail continues with small ups and mostly flat sections until we reach Yak Kharka, where we stop for lunch and rest. After lunch, we continue walking toward Ledar. The trail is steady and scenic, and today’s highlight is the close view of Chulu Himal. As we gain altitude, the landscape becomes more open and rugged, marking our transition into higher alpine terrain.

From here, the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake route starts to gain moderate elevation. You will navigate rocky ridges and scree slopes to reach Ledar. It is a relatively short trek today. Ledar is a small, remote settlement that offers spectacular views of the Annapurna Range and the Chulu. It is a perfect acclimatization stop before Thorong Phedi. You will spend the night here, with meals included.

Included activities:

  • Traverse high-altitude alpine meadows and rocky ridges on rough terrain.
  • Gorgeous views of Tilicho Peak, Annapurna II, and Gangapurna.
  • Experience the remote Himalayan wilderness and cultural interaction with the locals.
  • Overnight stay and rest at Ledar.

  • Accommodation:Teahouse
  • Trek Distance:8 km
  • Trek Duration:4 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:4,880 m
  • Overnight Place:High Camp
  • Day's Difficulty:Challenging

You will leave Ledar after breakfast and head towards High Camp. The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trekking trail ascends gently through a rocky highland plateau. You will come across small yak herder shelters along the way. Similarly, you can enjoy the sweeping views of Mount Gangapurna, Annapurna II, and Tilicho Peak. The narrow path has some steep sections near ridges. The mixed terrain of rocky, loose gravel, and scree makes the journey challenging. There are small Buddhist shrines and mani stones on the trail.

The sparse alpine vegetation gives way to more barren, rocky landscapes. The trail also becomes steeper. After walking for three hours, you will cross the suspension bridge and stop for lunch at Phedi. Then, your steep ascent to High Camp starts. You will traverse rugged trails and moraine ridges to reach High Camp. Once you reach High Camp, refresh yourself and take a short acclimatization hike to the nearby viewpoint. Today is the most challenging day of the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek journey. You will start the day early in the dark with a headlight lighting your path. Along the trail, you will pass by small cairns, colorful prayer flags, and occasionally snow patches. The final stretch to the top of the Thorong La Pass is the most challenging. It is the steepest and most exposed section of the trail. Finally, upon reaching the top of the pass, the hard work and perseverance you have shown over the last few days will pay off.

The Thorong La Pass (5,416 m/17,769 ft) offers a golden sunrise and stunning landscapes. You will get sweeping views of the snow-capped mountains, including Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri. • Safety first and see you soon!

Due to the weather, we weren't able to trek very far. However, there is so much I have to say about Karan and his team. Such professional men, and always had our safety first. I would 100000% recommend trekking with this company. I still carry a lot of grief over not being able to complete the trek, but I am so comforted by the fact that we were safe and with professionals. When I come back to Nepal, I look forward to trekking with Karan again.

  • Annapurna Circuit Trek

Went trekking with Karan and his team in the Fall of 2022 and had a great experience covering the Annapurna Circuit. The trek was beautiful and the guide team (Karan and two porters) significantly added to the experience. Our group did a custom trip for the 4-person group that worked well. The lodging and food they selected were great. The team added to the experience by making on-the-fly adjustment in the agenda (changing the overnight stay), booking a donkey to assist one of the group who developed a sore ankle, finding interesting dinner options (roasted chicken), and assisting with early exit family emergency transportation for one person in the party. More important than the logistics help was that the team was fun and engaging. When spending several weeks together, having a team that is fun to talk to and learn from significantly adds to the experience.

Which is the Best Time to do the Short Annapurna Circuit with the Tilicho Lake Trek?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the two best times to do the Short Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek. While spring and autumn are the best seasons, the Annapurna Circuit Trek short with Tilicho Lake is also possible in summer (June to August) and winter (December to February). However, trekkers must be aware of weather-related challenges.

Spring is a peak season for the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trekking. In early March, the weather can still be cold, and there may be light snow in higher elevations. Tilicho Lake and the Thorong La Pass may be closed during this period. As the season progresses, temperatures gradually warm. The snow starts to melt, and the trails become stable and dry. The high passes are also open for access. Due to warm temperatures, flora and fauna become more active. The entire rhododendron forest blooms into shades of red, pink, and white. The other colorful wildflowers also bloom in lower regions, bringing out the color of the Annapurna region landscapes. Spring is the best time for first-time trekkers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.

Autumn is another great time to complete the Short Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek. The pleasant weather, clear blue skies, and beautiful surroundings make it the most popular time for trekking. It is the perfect time to witness the grandeur of the Annapurna ranges and surrounding peaks. With the sky clear and summer rain cleansing the surroundings, the views are absolutely mesmerizing. Likewise, the autumn foliage also colors the green forests with hues of yellow and orange. The temperature remains stable during the day, but it may be slightly lower in the early morning and evening. During this period, the temperature ranges from -8 °C to 16 °C. Autumn is also the season of Nepali festivals and a time for celebration. Nepal’s biggest festivals, Dashain and Tihar, fall during this time of the year. You can align the trek date with the festival and participate in the celebration.

Monsoon enters Nepal in the summer. Therefore, it is the off-season for trekking the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake. It brings heavy rainfall in the hilly areas of the country. As a result, it causes several landslides along the lower route and is not safe for hiking. We strongly recommend avoiding trekking during the monsoon in the Annapurna region. However, if you want to trek in the Annapurna region during the monsoon, we recommend the Upper Mustang Trek.

Winter is off-season for trekking in Nepal. However, it’s getting more popular these days among seasoned trekkers and adventure seekers. The weather in the Annapurna region becomes more unpredictable and extreme in winter. It begins to snow heavily in the higher regions, and temperatures can reach -10 °C and sometimes drop even lower. Additionally, many lodges in the higher region close during winter. Heavy snow can pile up and block the trail. It makes crossing Thorong La Pass trickier.

If you are not really into challenging adventures but want to go hiking in the winter, the Short Ghorepani Trek or the Everest View Trek offers excellent alternatives.

What To Expect During the 12 Days Short Annapurna Circuit With Tilicho Lake Trek?

The Short Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is an extraordinary adventure, so expect to get a rewarding experience. Here are all the things that you expect during the journey in detail:

Journey through one of Nepal’s diverse landscapes

The Short Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trail takes you through one of the most varied landscapes of Nepal. You will not only walk through the Himalayas, but live and experience it. The changing scenery makes the journey more memorable. You will start from the lower subtropical river valleys and terrace farms. As you gradually ascend, the trekking route passes through conifer forests, cascading waterfalls, wooden bridges, and rivers. Then, the landscape becomes more barren and changes the trans-Himalayan terrain as you enter the Manang Valley.

You will go through the changes, which will leave you awe-struck. The green forests thin into alpine meadows and wide valleys, and then into a wind-carved Himalayan landscape shaped by rain-shadow conditions. Trekking to Tilicho Lake takes you past narrow trails, glaciers, and landslide-prone slopes. Meanwhile, crossing the Thorong La Pass offers sweeping views of the mountains, high valleys, and glaciers. The constant environmental contrast sets the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake apart. So, expect to enjoy the changing view and the surprises it brings.

Acclimatization and altitude challenge

The Short Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is a high-altitude journey, so expect the altitude challenge that comes with it. Luckily, the altitude gain is gradual compared to other high-altitude treks. Your body will have time to adapt to the elevation as you move to higher elevations where the air is thinner. At the beginning of the journey, the trek feels manageable despite the long hours of walking. As you gradually ascend, the trekking becomes more challenging. One may also experience symptoms of altitude sickness, such as slower breathing, reduced appetite, headache, and sleeplessness, before reaching Manang. Acclimatization is crucial before your trek to Tilicho Lake or your crossing of Thorong La Pass.

Expect the real altitude challenge in Manang, where you need to acclimatize to manage the risk. Strategic stops provide natural acclimatization points. The Tilicho Lake sits at 4,919 m and the Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m. Oxygen level drops to half at these altitudes. You will have to trek on rugged terrain and cold temperatures, which can push anyone to their limits. It is not technically difficult, but it requires reasonable fitness, endurance, and focus. Strategic rest days, gradual ascent, and proper hydration minimize the altitude-related challenges. It helps trekkers to tackle the demanding trail with reduced risk of altitude sickness. So, be ready for the high altitude and plan accordingly.

As you move to a higher altitude, you will also come across glacial landscapes. The Tilicho Lake itself is one of the world’s highest alpine lakes. Huge rock walls and hanging glaciers surround the lake. Likewise, glaciers carve valleys and gorges. Near Manang, you can see the massive Gangapurna Glacier along with its deep crevasses and icefalls in full view.
