Flow of Journey

Our journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Jagat. Along the way, we see rivers, green hills, terraced farms, and mountain villages. The views of Annapurna, Lamjung, and Manaslu welcome us from the start. From Jagat, we begin walking beside the Marsyangdi River and slowly move uphill. We pass through friendly Gurung villages such as Dharapani and Chame. These first days help us get used to walking while enjoying forests, waterfalls, and village life.

As we walk higher, the land slowly changes. Green forests turn into dry and rocky paths as we reach Pisang and Manang. We take time to rest in Manang to adjust to the altitude. From here, we leave the main trail to visit Tilicho Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world. After returning to the main route, we climb toward Thorong La Pass, the highest point of the trek. Once we cross the pass, we walk down to Muktinath and enter warmer valleys again. Our trek ends with forest walks to Ghorepani, a sunrise hike to Poon Hill, and a final descent before returning to Pokhara and Kathmandu.

The drive from Kathmandu to Jagat via Besisahar is in itself an adventure. The Annapurna Circuit with the Tilicho Lake Trek begins in the bustling capital, Kathmandu, and heads northwest. We will drive through the beautiful countryside of Nepal, passing through small towns and villages. At the start of the drive, you will drive on the paved highway. Then, as we approach Dhading, the winding mountain becomes rougher. The road winds through the hills, valleys, villages, and terrace farms.

Similarly, we can get the scenic view of the Trishuli River. From Dumre, we will join the Prithvi Highway, which connects Kathmandu and Pokhara. As we get closer to Pokhara, the gorgeous views of the Himalayan range in the distance start to become visible. After a while, the road begins to descend along the Marsyangdi River Valley and enters Besisahar. It is the gateway to the Annapurna region.

From Besisahar, the drive continues to Jagat, a small village located on the Annapurna Circuit trekking route. We will pass through small villages like Bhulbhule, Ngadi, and Bahundanda. This section of the drive takes us along narrow, winding mountain roads, passing small villages and hamlets along the way. The road is a mix of paved and rough gravel sections. It takes us to Jagat, a small village where we will stay overnight.  We will also see multiple waterfalls pouring down the hillsides, especially after rain or during warmer months. Some are thin streams, while others rush down with real force, cutting through rocks and greenery.

Included activities:

  • Early morning, scenic drive on the Prithvi Highway.
  • Drive along the beautiful Trishuli and Marsyangdi Rivers.

Day3

  • Accommodation:Lodge
  • Trek Distance:15 km
  • Trek Duration:6 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:1,860 m
  • Overnight Place:Dharapani
  • Day's Difficulty:Moderate

After breakfast at Jagat, we officially begin the trek, and to be real, it’s a beautiful way to start. We’ll follow the Marsyangdi River, crossing suspension bridges and walking past small settlements with hillside farms and narrow stone paths. The trail slowly climbs through a mix of forest dirt trails, stone steps, and small ridges, so it feels steady rather than rushed. You might notice how the scenery keeps changing, one moment you’re in open valleys, and the next you’re walking through a narrow gorge surrounded by cliffs.

One of the real highlights of this section is the Octopus Waterfall, about 5 km after Jagat. We’ll see water spilling down the rocks like the arms of an octopus, which honestly makes the name feel perfect. Surrounded by dense forests and misty hills, the waterfall feels calm and refreshing. On sunny days, we might even spot tiny rainbows in the spray, and that’s always fun to watch. After a few hours, we’ll reach Tal Village for lunch, where we can also check out Alsu Waterfall.

Similarly, the final stretch to Dharapani is a gentle uphill walk, nothing too demanding. We’ll start to notice wider views of the Annapurna range along the way, which makes the climb feel rewarding. By the time we reach Dharapani, the day feels nicely balanced through scenic, cultural, and not overly tiring.

Included activities:

  • Gradually ascend through dense forests, passing by green hills and mountain ridges.
  • Cross several suspension bridges over the Marsyangdi River and its tributaries.
  • Traverse traditional villages, terrace farms, and mountain ridges.
  • Octopus waterfall exploration
  • Reach Dharapani, the gateway to Manang Valley, and stay there overnight.

  • Accommodation:Lodge
  • Trek Distance:15 km
  • Trek Duration:6 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:2,610 m
  • Overnight Place:Chame
  • Day's Difficulty:Moderate

On this day, we will leave Dharapani on a well-marked Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek trail along the Marsyangdi River. It will gently take us upstream. There are several stone-paved paths and small footbridges along the way. Likewise, we will pass by small traditional houses. There are also colorful prayer flags, chortens, and stone cairns decorating the route.

We will also see a shift in the landscape as subtropical forests give way to pine forests and bamboo groves. The climate also becomes cooler. As we gradually ascend the winding route, we reach Bagarchhap. Moving forward, the trail passes small villages with teahouses and mani walls. We will continue ascending to Danaque, which offers a glimpse at Tibetan influence in the Annapurna region. Ascending on the stone staircases and dirt paths, we will pass by more terrace farmlands and mani walls. Shortly, we will reach Timang Village, where we will stop for lunch. As we eat, we’re rewarded with clear views of Manaslu and Lamjung Himal, the kind of scenery that makes you pause and think, "this is exactly why I came trekking".

After lunch and a short break, we will continue trekking. The trail takes us to Chame. As we get closer to Chame, the path opens up into a beautiful alpine meadow. Likewise, the view of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m) and Annapurna II (7,937 m) also comes into view. After trekking for some time, we will reach Chame, the administrative hub of Manang District. It is nestled within the Marsyangdi River Valley, north of Annapurna II and west of Paungda Danda. We will rest overnight here.

Included activities:

  • Cross several suspension bridges over rushing rivers.
  • The lush, green subtropical forest changes into pine forests, bamboo groves, and then to alpine meadows.
  • Lunch at Timang village.
  • Traverse traditional villages with Tibetan influence, colorful prayer flags, and mani walls.
  • Witness sweeping views of Mount Manaslu and Annapurna II and stay overnight at Chame.

Day5
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Accommodation:Lodge
  • Trek Distance:14 km
  • Trek Duration:5-6 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:3,115 m
  • Overnight Place:Pisang
  • Day's Difficulty:Moderate to challenging

The Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trekking route from Chame to Pisang winds through scenic landscapes. After breakfast, we will gradually ascend through alpine forests. The first part of the trail follows the Marsyangdi River, which provides a serene atmosphere as we trek forward. As the trail gradually ascends through pine and fir forests, we can get occasional glimpses of the snow-capped peaks in the distance. Just above the forested ridges, we can see Mount Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal.

One of the most spectacular landmarks along the route is the Paungda Danda rock formation. The rock is located nearly 1,500 m above the Marshyangdi River. It is a huge curved slab of rock that stands like a rock wall on the trail right below Annapurna II. As we continue the trek, the trail turns into a narrow valley and heads towards a deep gorge. Towering rock walls surround us from both sides. Similarly, we will pass through several small remote settlements. There are a few highlights worth stopping for along the way. Bhartang is a popular apple farm. Here, we can sip freshly squeezed apple juice in the sun. It is also a great spot to refill water bottles.

Not far after that, Dhukur Pokhari makes for a scenic lunch stop with stunning views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. As we continue, the landscape gradually becomes more sparse and alpine. Walking toward Lower Pisang, the trail opens up into a wide valley flanked by cliffs, passing lakes, grassy fields, and snow-dusted slopes as the river winds its way between Lower and Upper Pisang.

Finally, we will reach Upper Pisang, from where we can enjoy panoramic views of Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, and Pisang Peak. We will see many traditional stone houses, ancient monasteries, and fluttering prayer flags in the village. We will stay here for the night, enjoying the beautiful scenery and cultural immersion.

Included activities:

  • Experience the landscape change from pine forests to arid trans-Himalayan terrain.
  • Trek past the iconic Paungda Danda rock formation, scenic suspension bridges, narrow gorges, Dhukur Pokhari, and Bhartang.
  • Enjoy grand views of Mount Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, Lamjung Himal, and Pisang Peak.
  • Explore Tibetan-influenced settlements with ancient monasteries, chortens, mani walls, and prayer flags.

  • Accommodation:Lodge
  • Trek Distance:16 km
  • Trek Duration:6-7 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:3,540 m
  • Overnight Place:Manang
  • Day's Difficulty:Moderate

After a hearty breakfast at Upper Pisang, we will head towards Manang. Today, we will traverse a wide alpine valley with windswept terrain and rain shadow landscapes. We will also have constant views of the surrounding mountains. The Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek route gradually ascends to the Upper Manang Valley. We will start gaining altitude, and the trail becomes steeper as we head towards Ghyaru.

Likewise, panoramic views of Mount Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, Lamjung Himal, and Pisang Peak open before us. Given the strong influence of Tibetan Buddhism in the region, we will encounter stone mani walls, chortens, and prayer flags. From Ghyaru, we will follow the mountain trail to Ngawal. We will continue trekking through windswept, arid landscapes. Along the way, we will encounter small settlements with stone-and-wood houses.

Similarly, we can get stunning views of the Marshyangdi Valley and jagged ridgelines of the snow-capped mountains. We will also visit the 600-year-old Brakha Monastery at Brakha. After a while, we will gradually descend before it begins to climb gently towards Manang. It is the largest village in the Upper Valley and a crucial acclimatization stop along the Annapurna Circuit trail. Gorgeous views of the Gangapurna, Annapurna III, and Tilicho Peak will greet us upon our arrival in Manang. We will also rest here and take an acclimatization day before continuing our Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek.

Included activities:

  • Trek on the scenic and semi-arid trail from Upper Pisang to Ghyaru to Ngawal route.
  • Enjoy gorgeous mountain views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Gangapurna, and Pisang Peak.
  • Traverse Tibetan-influenced villages with ancient monasteries, prayer walls, and mani walls.
  • Visit Brakha Monastery.
  • Gradually ascend to Manang Valley, one of the most crucial acclimatization stops.

Day7
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Accommodation:Lodge
  • Trek Distance:3-4 km (Gangapurna Lake)/ 7-8 km (Ice Lake)
  • Trek Duration:1-2 hours (Gangapurna Lake)/ 6-8 hours (Ice Lake)
  • Sleep Elevation:3,540 m
  • Overnight Place:Manang
  • Day's Difficulty:Moderate (Gangapurna Lake)/ Challenging (Ice Lake)

Today, we will take an acclimatization day at Manang. It is crucial to allow the body to acclimate to the increasing altitude and improve oxygen adaptation. Although it is a rest day, we will also take a side hike to slightly higher-altitude areas. It is to follow the “climb high, sleep low” principle of acclimatization.

We can take a side hike to either the Gangapurna Lake (3,900 m) or the Ice Lake (4,600 m). If you prefer an easier hike, Gangapurna Lake is ideal. The trail from Manang starts with a gentle ascent, passing by prayer flags and mani walls. We will follow the gentle trail to turquoise Gangapurna Lake. It starts to get steeper and more challenging as you climb further to Gangapurna Viewpoint (~4,000 m), overlooking the spectacular Gangapurna Glacier. From here, we can enjoy a grand view of Mount Gangapurna, Annapurna III, Tilicho Peak, and Chulu East. Similarly, we can witness the beautiful alpine scenery and rocky moraines.

If you want a challenging side hike, we can take a side hike to Ice Lake, also known as Kicho Tal. Compared to Gangapurna Lake, it takes you to an altitude above 4,600 m. The hike also takes longer. We will start with a gradual ascent from Manang. The winding trail will ascend through alpine meadows and barren slopes. Along the way, we will pass by scenic glacier viewpoints. The trail becomes steep and rocky as we approach Ice Lake. Upon reaching the Ice Lake, the tranquil atmosphere and surrounding scenery will reward us. From a panoramic view of the Annapurna Range and the Gangapurna Glacier, the view is spectacular. Since the lake sits in a high-altitude basin with glacial streams, we can also enjoy beautiful alpine scenery.

After the side hike, we will descend to Manang. During the remaining time, you may explore the village and visit local bakeries and monasteries. You may also rest and relax at the teahouse. Spend another night at Manang.

Included activities:

  • Follow the “climb high, sleep low” technique for altitude adaptation.
  • Take a side hike to Gangapurna Glacier Viewpoint or Ice Lake (Kicho Tal).
  • Enjoy a stunning view of Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak, along with surrounding glaciers and alpine scenery.
  • Explore Manang village, the surrounding monasteries, bakeries, and sites.

Day8
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Accommodation:Lodge
  • Trek Distance:12 km
  • Trek Duration:4-5 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:4,080 m
  • Overnight Place:Siri Kharka
  • Day's Difficulty:Moderate to challenging

After an acclimatization day in Manang, we will begin our final high-altitude ascent. We will begin the hike toward Siri Kharka, leaving the beautiful village of Manang behind. Soon after starting, the trail splits toward Tilicho Lake, and right away, we’ll notice the stunning mountain views. To be real, this part of the walk feels special as huge peaks like Annapurna II, III, and IV, Gangapurna, Pisang Peak, and Tilicho Peak rise all around us as we move forward.

After about 40 minutes of walking, we will cross a suspension bridge over the Marsyangdi River. From here, the trail slowly climbs through alpine trees. At times, we will walk on the main road, and at other times, we follow the trekking path, which keeps the walk interesting. After about two hours, we reach Khangsar village and continue a gentle uphill walk toward Siri Kharka. On the way, we will pass Tare Gompa, and we’ll notice the trail switching back and forth as it climbs. From today onward, we are mostly above the tree line.

During the hike from Manang to Siri Kharka, we may spot wildlife such as blue sheep, mountain goats, and birds like snow cocks, Himalayan monals, and vultures. Seeing a snow leopard is very rare, but just knowing they live in this area adds excitement to the walk. Once we reach Siri Kharka, we will check into our lodge and take some time to explore the area. The views from Siri Kharka are truly magical and make the day’s walk well worth it.

Included activities:

  • Trek past small traditional settlements, ancient gompas, mani walls, and prayer flags.
  • Get a close-up look at the Gangapurna Glacier, traversing arid landscape with sparse vegetation and windswept valleys.
  • Traverse while enjoying the sweeping mountain view of Annapurna III, Tilicho Peak, and more.
  • Observe the traditional high-altitude village lifestyle and traverse Tibetan-style settlements.
Day9
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Accommodation:Lodge
  • Trek Distance:8 km
  • Trek Duration:3-4 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:3,900 m
  • Overnight Place:Tilicho Base Camp
  • Day's Difficulty:Moderate

On this day, we will leave the main Circuit trail from Siri Kharka and start trekking on the offbeat and remote Tilicho Lake trekking trail. We will begin with a gentle ascent with a view of towering mountains on the left and enter the Tilicho Lake region. After Upper Siri Kharka, we will cross a suspension bridge and continue with a short climb, followed by a mostly flat walk. Soon, we will reach the long landslide area. To be real, this is the most challenging part of the day. The path is narrow, loose, and rocky, and strong winds or wild animals can cause falling stones. Please don’t use earphones or play loud music here. Stay close to your guide and follow instructions carefully. Crossing this landslide can take up to two hours.

Moving forward, the less-traveled trail to Tilicho Lake offers spectacular rock formations and glaciers. We can also enjoy the view of the snow-capped vista of Tilicho Peak. Then the trail takes us through the Chhule and Mesokanto-La trail junction before finally arriving at the Tilicho Base Camp. Along the way, we might see mountain goats, blue sheep, thar, and birds like vultures. As we get closer to Tilicho Base Camp, the landscape opens up to a wide valley. We can see alpine shrubs scattered around. We will stay overnight at the lodge in the Tilicho Base Camp. It is at the strategic point for acclimatization before attempting the hike to Tilicho Lake.

Good to know:

  • Tilicho Lake and the return to Siri Kharka take 2 days and 1 night, so don’t carry all your luggage. Bring only what you need for these two days.
  • When you see horses or donkeys coming toward you on narrow trails, always step to the inside (mountain side), not the edge. Even a small push can cause a serious accident.

Included activities:

  • Hike on the remote and off-the-beaten trail, passing by high-altitude terrain and an alpine environment.
  • Traverse moraine slopes, glacial streams,  and landslide-prone areas.
  • Enjoying the spectacular views of Tilicho Peak and other surrounding Himalayan peaks.
  • Reach the Tilicho Base Camp and prepare for your hike to Tilicho Lake the next day.
Day10
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Accommodation:Lodge
  • Trek Distance:11 km
  • Trek Duration:4-5 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:4,080 m
  • Overnight Place:Siri Kharka
  • Day's Difficulty:Challenging

Today, an exciting hike to one of the world’s highest alpine lakes begins. We will leave the Tilicho Base Camp early in the morning (around 3:30 AM), as the weather conditions are calm and stable. It also helps to avoid any possible strong winds that are common in the afternoon. The trail to Tilicho Lake is narrow, rocky, and exposed. It is carved into steep slopes, so we need to ascend steadily. As we gradually climb, the landscape becomes more barren, with glacial moraines, loose scree, and frozen streams. Due to the increasing altitude and rough terrain, the ascent is demanding. It will take around 4-5 hours to reach Tilicho Lake.

Once we reach the glacial Tilicho Lake and lay our eyes on its turquoise-colored waters, we will be awestruck. Colorful prayer flags flutter along the lakeshore, and the tranquil atmosphere will touch your heart and soul. It is an emotional as well as spiritual moment. The grand view of Tilicho Peak, Khangsar Kang, Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Nilgiri North will leave you mesmerized. You can take some time to enjoy the beauty of the glacial lake and capture photographs.

Then, we will retrace your steps to Tilicho Base Camp and to Siri Kharka. The descent is slightly easier than the ascent. We will stay overnight at Siri Kharka, which is a safer sleeping altitude. It also provides an ideal location for recovery after the high-altitude hike to Tilicho Lake.

Included activities:

  • Early morning hike to Tilicho Lake (4,900 m), one of the highest alpine lakes in the world.
  • Thrilling hike along the glacial landscapes, steep slopes, and exposed trail.
  • Witness the turquoise-colored Tilicho Lake and panoramic views of the towering peaks surrounding the lake.
  • Descend to Siri Kharka and stay overnight.
Day11
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Accommodation:Lodge
  • Trek Distance:11 km
  • Trek Duration:5 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:4,200 m
  • Overnight Place:Ledar
  • Day's Difficulty:Moderate to challenging

We will continue our Annapurna Circuit with the Tilicho Lake Trek journey today, leaving Siri Kharka. We will rejoin the classic route from today onwards. The trail is relatively gentle and goes through open alpine hillsides. It passes through arid, windswept landscapes. We may come across scattered yak pastures occasionally. Along the way, we can see the Upper Manang Valley and the surrounding Himalayas. There are not many large villages aside from small seasonal herder settlements. We will head toward Khangsar Village along a downhill trail.

On the way, we will come across the ancient Tare Gumba monastery, which is over a thousand years old. After crossing the village, we follow a rocky wall that leads through the Thorong Khola Valley to Yak Kharka. Throughout the day, Mount Gangapurna, Chulu East, and Tilicho Peak are clearly visible. As we approach Yak Kharka, the trail descends and then levels out. From here, the air becomes thinner due to the gradual increase in altitude. For the final stretch to Ledar, we will steadily climb through open alpine terrain. It takes you to the small settlement of Ledar with simple lodges. We will stay here overnight, enjoying the grand views and peaceful atmosphere.

Included activities:

  • Join the main Annapurna Circuit Trek route.
  • Traverse arid landscapes with alpine grazing areas and yak pastures.
  • Enjoy the broad views of Mount Gangapurna, Chulu East, and Tilicho Peak.
  • Trek past small yak herder settlements and open alpine terrain to reach Ledar.
Annapurna II (7,937m)
Day12
  • Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Accommodation:Lodge
  • Trek Distance:8 km
  • Trek Duration:4 hours
  • Sleep Elevation:4,880 m
  • Overnight Place:High Camp
  • Day's Difficulty:Challenging

On this day, we will leave Ledar and head towards High Camp. The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trekking route traverses high-altitude Trans-Himalayan landscapes. The terrain is dry and rugged with sparse vegetation. After leaving Yak Kharka, we will cross a small suspension bridge over the Jorsang Khola. It gradually climbs, taking you past a landslide-prone section. We need to navigate carefully and cross this section. The thin air, rough terrain, and strong wind make today’s trek demanding. As we head deeper into the Annapurna region, we will start to get a sense of remoteness and isolation. Then, we will reach Thorong Phedi, which sits at the base of the Thorong La Pass.

The name Thorong Phedi means “the foot of the hill.” It is the major stop before crossing the high mountain pass. The trail becomes steeper from here onwards. We must also trek on zigzag paths, which is physically and mentally demanding. As we head towards High Camp, you can see the stunning views of the Thorong massif, Khatung Kang, and the surrounding glaciers. The last section from Phedi to High Camp is especially tough and can take 40 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace.

Reaching High Camp is an achievement in itself. Once there, we’ll find a small cluster of lodges perched high above the valley, perfect for resting before the big pass. You might notice that even though the lodges are simple, the location is spectacular. After settling in, we will take a short hike to the nearby viewpoint. The panorama of valleys below, jagged peaks around, and glacial ridges in the distance is spectacular. We will rest here for the night, which is one of the highest overnight stops of the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek.

Today’s trek is undoubtedly one of the most challenging walks of the entire Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek. The day begins with a brutal four-hour steep ascent to the top of Thorong La. We will start very early, before dawn, to avoid the strong afternoon winds. The winding trail leads us through rugged terrain and loose rocks. It makes the climb even more challenging. The ascent is slow, and the high altitude with rugged terrain makes the journey demanding. But once we reach the summit, we will be rewarded with a grand view of snow-capped Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Similarly, we can witness the wonderful landscapes and towering hills.

After taking in the stunning scenery, we will descend from the top & descend to Chabarbu. The descending trail is equally challenging. We must descend along a steep, continuous trail with loose scree and rocky sections. As we climb downhill, the air becomes warmer. Chabaru is a popular spot for trekkers to take a break, relax, and have some snacks before continuing the trek. From here, we will trek through long grassy meadows and steep slopes before descending to Muktinath.

Upon arriving at Muktinath, we will have the opportunity to see numerous ancient Tibetan monasteries and stupas. It also rewards with jaw-dropping views of Dhaulagiri and its neighboring snow peaks. We will also visit the sacred Muktinath Temple. It is a holy pilgrimage site for Hindu and Buddhist devotees. You can offer prayers alongside other devotees and immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions. Tonight, you will stay at a lodge in Muktinath village.

ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT | TILICHO LAKE | POON HILL | TREK IN NEPAL

Clients Reviews

  • Unforgettable Hike on Annapurna circuit

Can't recommend Karan and his team enough. From early points of email contact, through to multiple plan changes (3 members of group from UK, 4 from austraila) and even a mid trek change to take group of 4 over pass instead of them returning from tilicho Lake; Karan took it all in his stride seamlessly working behind scenes to make everything run smoothly. His team were cheerful and kind, giving Nepali lessons and joining in card games in the evenings. We all felt well supported. Even managed to get a whole pack of gear super cheaply at 630am the morning of departure when one of our luggage failed to arrive. Felt like porters were valued and karan was a logistics expert. Amazing bonding and memories to last a lifetime. If you're thinking about trekking just do it and call these guys, you won't regret it.

  • Perfect trip with amazing people

Me and my friend did the Annapurna Circuit and Mardi Himal with Karan as our guide. We had an amazing time and we were soo happy with the way everything was arranged. Good places to sleep and eat, always looking out for our safety and good company. As two young women, we always felt safe, while we also had a blast. My friend is gluten intolerant, and even that was taken well into account and arranged by Karan.

    I highly recommend Nature Excursion.

Useful Information

What Is Special About the Annapurna Circuit With Tilicho Lake Trek?

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake is a unique trek that combines the classic Annapurna Circuit’s diversity with the unparalleled beauty of Tilicho Lake. But it is not the only reason the trek is special. Here’s what makes this combination so special:

A Combination of the Classic and the Quite Himalayan Route

The 18 Days Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek combines two complete trekking experiences into a single journey. You will trek along the well-established Annapurna Circuit and also take a quiet side route to remote Tilicho Lake. The classic trail passes through notable villages like Dharapani, Chame, Pisang, and Manang. Then, you will follow the offbeat trail from Siri Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp and to the beautiful Tilicho Lake.

While covering the distance, you will come across a diverse landscape. The main trail is well-designated and lined with teahouses. Compared to this, the trail to Tilicho Lake is quieter and more rugged. Similarly, it is narrower and harsher, passing by remote valleys. The classic Circuit trek is challenging, and the demanding side hike to the alpine lake further increases the difficulty. However, the challenges make the journey more thrilling and make the trip a real high-altitude experience. The combination of the two treks in one offers an enriching experience of classic trek and a lesser-traveled Himalayan trail.

Trek to One of the World’s Highest Alpine Lakes

The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake offers you a side hike to Tilicho Lake (4,919 m). It is one of the highest alpine lakes in the world, located below the towering Tilicho Peak. The lake is far from the crowds, set in the untouched, remote Annapurna region. You will take the detour from Siri Kharka and climb to the lake via Tilicho Base Camp. The trail from the base camp is challenging with thin air and rugged terrain. However, overcoming the challenges and standing before the turquoise-colored lake rewards all your effort.

TIlicho Lake
TIlicho Lake (4,919m)

When you take a side hike to the Tilicho Lake, you will notice a significant change in the landscape. It is barren and remote, so you will feel isolated from the rest of the world. You will reach deep into the high-altitude landscape that is shaped by ancient glaciers. Surrounded by high-altitude alpine landscapes, you can view spectacular mountains from the mountain. From the Annapurna and Gangapurna ranges to the Nilgiri Himal, Khangsar Kang, and Tilicho Peak, it is a visual feast. The combination of turquoise waters and snow-capped peaks, along with the trek to Tilicho Lake on the Annapurna Circuit, makes the journey special.

Cross the Legendary Thorong La Pass

The iconic Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) crossing is undoubtedly one of the reasons the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is special. The pass is also the highest point of the trek. During the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek, you will cross after the detour to Tilicho Lake. You will ascend from Thorung Phedi on a steep and demanding trail. The high altitude and the thin air add to the challenges. It will test your physical and mental limits. As a result, when you finally reach the top of the pass, a huge sense of accomplishment and emotions overwhelm you.

Thorang La Pass
Thorang La Pass (5,416 m)

In addition to the emotional and mental rewards, you will also be rewarded with mesmerizing views. From the gorgeous panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, you can see the Marsyangdi and Kali Gandaki River Valleys, and arid landscapes. Despite the popularity of the Annapurna Circuit trekking trail, the Thorong La Pass remains remote. Therefore, you will get to experience peaceful solitude. Crossing the pass is not only about conquering it. It is also about pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone, which makes the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake a memorable and special experience.

Changing Landscape & Culture Diversity

Another speciality of the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is the diverse landscape and rich cultural experience. The trek journey begins from the subtropical lowlands of Dharapani. It gradually ascends through a lush forest of rhododendrons, oaks, and firs. Then, it changes to coniferous forests, alpine meadows, semi-arid landscapes, and glacial valleys. The turquoise waters of the Tilicho Lake also offer striking visual marvels. Every day, you will traverse different landscapes and enjoy constantly changing scenery.

Along with the altitude and landscape, there is also a shift in the cultural experience. Different ethnic communities reside along the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trekking trail. In the lower and mid-altitude regions, you will come across the Gurung and Magar villages. At higher elevations, you will pass by the beautiful settlements of Manangi and the Thakali communities with Tibetan influence. Each community has its own unique culture, traditions, attire, and customs. You will also observe architectural diversity while traversing these villages. Passing through these villages, staying at rustic teahouses, and interacting with locals enriches the entire trek experience. It elevates the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek into a cultural journey.

Authentic Himalayan Trek Experience

If you want to experience an authentic Himalayan trekking experience, the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek is the perfect journey. You will traverse remote villages with traditional houses and paddy farms. As you go higher, you will trek on the trail dotted with prayer flags, mani walls, chortens, stupas, and stone cairns. Over the past year, the main Annapurna Circuit trek route has seen increased road access. It has made the circuit trail more accessible, and the trail has become busier. However, it still retains its authentic trek experience. Tilicho Lake remains comparatively less crowded and less traveled.

Unlike other commercialized treks, the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek offers a raw charm and wilderness. The remote location and solitude allow you to connect with the pristine nature and snow-capped vistas. With adventurous trails and high-altitude settlements that remain untouched by mass tourism, it is a perfect Himalayan adventure. You will not only trek along the rugged mountain trail but also learn about the Himalayan way of life. On this trek, you will explore the Annapurna region in depth and experience authentic Himalayan trekking.

Pisang Peak Climbing With Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek

It provides an unparalleled Himalayan adventure, awe-inspiring scenery, and rich cultural immersion. Pisang Peak (6,091 m) is a striking pyramid-shaped mountain in the Annapurna region. It is one of the classic trekking peaks, ideal for first-time Himalayan mountaineering. While challenging, it does not possess extreme technical difficulties. As a result, the peak is accessible to climbers with basic mountaineering skills. You will navigate glaciers, crevasses, snow slopes, and steep ridges, giving you an authentic mountaineering experience. The summit rewards you with panoramic views of Annapurna II (7,937m), Annapurna III (7,555 m), Annapurna IV (7,525 m), Gangapurna (7,454m), Tilicho Peak (7,134 m), Chulu East (6,584 m), and Chulu West (6,419 m).

Annapurna Circuit Trek With Tilicho Lake: Difficulty & Preparation

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is a challenging adventure that requires stamina and physical fitness. It is a physically demanding and high-altitude trek that requires careful preparation. Therefore, understanding the difficulty of the trip and preparing accordingly allows you to enjoy a safer and more enriching trekking experience.

The high altitude, long trekking days, and diverse terrain of the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek make the journey difficult. The daily trek averages 6 to 7 hours. Similarly, it involves long uphill climbs, steep descents, and flat trails. While prior hiking experience can be advantageous, technical skills are not required for the trip. That said, hiking at higher elevations can be more physically demanding than at lower elevations. The rugged terrain, thin air, and unpredictable Himalayan weather will test every trekker physically and mentally.

Therefore, start preparing for the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake journey at least 2 to 3 months before the departure. You need to build your physical condition. Focus on cardiovascular exercise, building your leg and core strength, and improving your endurance. Regular exercise, such as jogging, running, cycling, swimming, and hiking with a weighted backpack, is excellent for cardio. Start with easy exercises and be consistent. Then, gradually increase the intensity of your workout. You also need an altitude preparation strategy. A positive attitude, self-confidence, and determination are also necessary for the trek. Especially if you are a beginner, you also need to select the right season and appropriate gear for this combined trek.

Before booking the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake, participants with pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart, lung, or blood diseases, should consult their doctor and inform us. Participants must also be in good health and have regular physical fitness to join this trek.

Altitude Sickness & Acclimatization Strategies During the Annapurna Circuit via Tilicho Lake

As the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake is a high-altitude trek, there is a risk of altitude sickness. The higher you go, the lower the oxygen level in the atmosphere. By the time you reach Tilicho Lake at 4,900 m, the oxygen level is 60% of sea level. It further decreases to 50% of sea level at the top of the Thorong La Pass. Thus, trekkers can experience various symptoms of altitude sickness. These symptoms can vary from trekker to trekker and can affect anyone. Hence, it is crucial to take proper precautions and acclimate to minimize the risk.

The mildest form of altitude sickness is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Its symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and loss of appetite. High-altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High-altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) are the severe forms and can be life-threatening without proper medical assistance. HAPE occurs when fluid accumulates in the lungs due to reduced oxygen. Meanwhile, HACE occurs when the brain swells due to a lack of oxygen. Proper precautions and strategic acclimatization are the best ways to manage altitude sickness. While it may not fully prevent symptoms, it helps reduce their severity and ensure a safer trekking experience.

To avoid altitude sickness during the trek, do the following things:

  • Maintain your pace and gradually ascend to the higher elevations.
  • Follow the “climb high, sleep low” principle. It means hiking at higher elevations during the day and sleeping in slightly lower areas.
  • Drink at least 3-4 liters of water per day.
  • Do not smoke or drink alcoholic beverages, as these worsen the symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • Take plenty of rest and eat nutritious food with high carbohydrate and low fat content.
  • Take at least one acclimatization day at Manang. It helps the body adapt to increasing altitude and decreasing oxygen levels.
  • Monitor the symptoms. If you begin experiencing severe symptoms, descend to a lower altitude immediately. Also, carry Diamox (acetazolamide) and use it as a preventive measure.

During our 18 Days Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek, we have ensured that the daily elevation increase does not exceed 500 meters. This will help our guests adjust to the altitude as they trek. Our itinerary includes an acclimatization day in Manang village and several other hikes. As you trek with high-altitude experts, you are in safe hands. Even if you get altitude sickness symptoms, our guides will provide immediate care and precautions. They will ensure you are all good before gaining altitude. If your symptoms are severe, our guides will request immediate evacuation for your safety and well-being.

Group/Private Annapurna Circuit Trek With Tilicho Lake Trek

You can take either the group or private Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek. It depends on your requirement and preference. The choice between group and private treks can significantly affect the overall trekking experience, including comfort and immersion.

Group Trek is for individual trekkers who are comfortable with new people and budget-conscious. Although you will have to share logistics and resources, this arrangement reduces expenses. Trekking in a group also provides a sense of safety and support during the trip. Trekkers can motivate one another during challenging times. It also reduces the sense of isolation while exploring remote areas of the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek route. However, group trekking is less flexible, and all trekkers must follow a fixed schedule. The pace is also fixed at a steady rate to accommodate all types of trekkers. It may feel slow for some and fast for others.

If you prefer not to travel with unfamiliar people and seek a quieter trekking experience, you can opt for a private trek. It is perfect for introvert trekkers, couples, and small families. The Private Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek offers the flexibility to customize the itinerary fully. You can easily adjust the number of trekking days, add extra side hikes, make stops where you desire, and take longer to acclimatize. Similarly, you can trek at your own pace and get a more exclusive experience. You will have more care and attention from your guide, and there is no need to share logistics or resources with others. However, private trek costs more. There is also less social interaction, which can make trekkers feel isolated.

Based on your budget and preference, you can make your choice accordingly. Our team at Nature Excursion is well-equipped and experienced in organizing small and large groups for the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trek. We offer group discounts for teams with more than five members. The larger the group, the higher the discount. We ensure that all groups receive the same level of service, regardless of their size. A group leader will accompany the team, and every two trekkers will have a porter to carry their luggage. For groups of 12 or more, an assistant guide will be added to provide additional support and guidance during the trek.

Please contact us to discuss your group’s needs, and we can customize the trek to meet your preferences and budget.

*Note:If Nature Excursion assembles the group, the group will not be eligible for discounts. This applies to all group sizes.

Seasonal Guide for Annapurna Circuit With Tilicho Lake

When planning your Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trek, it’s essential to consider the weather conditions, as they can significantly affect your experience. Nepal experiences four seasons, each with its own unique characteristics. Trail conditions also vary by season and weather. Similarly, the scenery and visibility also change accordingly.

The best times to trek are in the spring (March to May) & autumn (September to November). These seasons have the best weather conditions. The skies are clear, temperatures are pleasant, and there is minimal rain or cloud cover. Additionally, the visibility is excellent with minimal obstruction. Hence, these seasons offer stunning panoramic mountain views, lush vegetation,  and comfortable trekking conditions. It is an ideal time for first-time trekkers, as trail conditions are most stable.

If you’re up for a challenge, the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek in the summer or winter is perfect. Note that these seasons present unique challenges. In winter, cold temperatures and snowfall can make trekking more difficult, whereas in summer the trails can be slippery due to monsoon rains.

At Nature Excursion, we organize this trek year-round so you can choose the best time for you. But before you make the decision, here is a complete seasonal breakdown for the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek.

Annapurna Circuit Trek With Tilicho Lake in Spring (March to May)

Spring is undoubtedly the most popular time for the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trekking. The season boasts mild temperatures, low rainfall, and clear skies, making it ideal for trekking. During this time, thousands of travelers flock to the Annapurna region to experience the stunning views and diverse landscapes. The clear skies offer excellent visibility with very few obstructions.

At higher elevations, the average daily temperature ranges from 8°C to 0°C. It can feel cold, but it is manageable with appropriate clothing. In the lower regions, the temperatures are warmer, making trekking comfortable. Due to warm temperatures, rhododendron forests in the subtropical areas also bloom fully in various shades of red, pink, and white. The pleasant weather, along with the blooming flowers and greenery, makes spring one of the best times to do the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake trek.

Annapurna Circuit Trek With Tilicho Lake in Summer/Monsoon (June to August)

June to August mark the summer season in Nepal. Although the temperature during this period is warm and pleasant, it collides with the monsoon season (rainy season). Hence, there is heavy rainfall in the lower, hilly regions. It can cause the trails to become wet and slippery, making navigation difficult. There is also the risk of landslides and mudslides. The monsoon season typically starts at the end of June and lasts until the first week of September.

One advantage of trekking during the monsoon season is the blooming of vegetation, which makes the trekking region appear lush and green. At high elevations, daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 23°C, whereas nighttime temperatures are cooler, ranging from 5°C to 10°C. Despite the rain, mornings are generally cloud-free, whereas clouds typically appear in the afternoon and dissipate at night.

It gradually gets heavier and piles up as winter progresses. But contrary to belief, it is not always gloomy during this season. Days are sunny, and temperatures range from 6°C to 12°C. Handling the Altitude, Fatigue, and Weather: Practical Tips

The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is a challenging adventure that requires understanding the difficulties and how to handle them properly. Despite preparation, the trek will test you in every way. Take a look at some handy tips and tricks that will help you handle the challenges during the journey:

  • Do not skip acclimatization at Manang. Even if you are an experienced trekker, do not underestimate altitude sickness. As you ascend to higher elevations, maintain your pace and breathe slowly to conserve energy.
  • Expect appetite loss when you ascend to an altitude above 4,000 m. At such times, you need to eat anyway to maintain energy for the trek.
  • Your sleep quality also drops as you ascend to an altitude above 4,000 m. Eat warm food before sleeping and carry a sleeping bag rated –10°C to –15°C.
  • Monitor your body at all times and do not ignore early warning signs. Symptoms like unusual breathlessness, sudden mood changes, poor sleep, and persistent headache are some early signs that need to be watched closely.
  • Combining the Annapurna Circuit with a side hike to Tilicho Lake results in longer trekking days. Hence, fatigue can add up over the days. Therefore, rest well, maintain a steady pace, and stay hydrated at all times. You also need to increase your carbohydrate intake in cold zones.
  • While on the trek, wear warm layers not only for cold weather but also to protect against strong winds. Weather at higher elevations is unpredictable, and strong winds are common when trekking in these regions. Thus, carry warm, windproof clothing.
  • During the trek, you need to start early, eat well, and trek steadily. Similarly, you need to respect altitude and changing weather conditions. If you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness, take precautions immediately. If the symptoms worsen, you must descend immediately.

Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake 18 Days FAQs

Similarly, you must have the strength and stamina to walk long hours on steep uphill and downhill sections. Reasonable endurance is also necessary for trekking at high elevations and low oxygen levels.

  • No, you do not need to hire a licensed guide and porter for the Annapurna Circuit trek and Tilicho Lake, as our package includes a professional guide and porter. They will accompany you throughout the journey. There will be one porter for every two trekkers, and the luggage weight is 10 kg per trekker.

  • The Tilicho Lake trail is more exposed than the main Annapurna Circuit route. Compared to the main circuit, the Tilicho Lake route is narrow and slanted with landslide-prone sections. You will also need to traverse loose scree. Most of the trail runs above the treeline, and you will be more exposed to strong winds, rockfall, and sudden weather changes.

  • Yes, crossing the Thorong La becomes more challenging after visiting Tilicho Lake. Including Tilicho Lake in the Annapurna Circuit adds longer days and additional altitude gain. Fatigue builds up over the days, and it leaves trekkers’ legs and lungs less rested before crossing the Thorong La Pass. Therefore, proper preparation, steady pacing, acclimatization, and adequate rest are crucial for the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek.

  • The new road development has made the Annapurna Circuit more accessible, but its classic and adventurous experience remains the same. It is still worth visiting and offers spectacular views of mountain vistas, diverse landscapes, and a rich cultural experience. Higher sections, such as Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass, remain remote. The road development has made logistics easier, but has not diminished the adventure.

There can be sudden snow, heavy rain, or strong winds. As a result, it can delay your trekking days. So, trekkers must include contingency or extra days in their itinerary.

  • Yes, altitude can affect even fit trekkers during the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek without proper precautions. Physical fitness improves trekkers’ stamina and endurance. It does not prevent altitude sickness, which is caused by reduced oxygen levels at higher elevations. Therefore, all trekkers must take proper acclimatization to minimize the risk. It is also crucial to ascend gradually, stay hydrated, and take appropriate precautions.
