Stunning Sunrise or Sunset View Point (Poon Hill 3,210 meter)

When it comes to unforgettable Himalayan views, Poon Hiil (3,210 meter) easily steals the spotlights.  It’s one of Nepal’s most beloved and accessible viewpoints, especially famous for its marvelous sunrise that bathes the snow-capped giants of the Annapurna range in a golden light.

As the first light of the day peeks over the horizon, your eyes are treated with the panoramic displays of Himalayan peaks including Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchrey, Hiunchuli, and Nilgiri. When the sun starts to rise, it lights up the snow-covered peaks in glowing shades of pink and orange.

In spring, the Poonhill is even more beautiful. The hills are covered with colourful rhododendron flowers, making the entire forest look like it is a painting. The mix of blooming rhododendron and glowing mountain at sunrise is truly magical.

About Annapurna Base Camp

Annapurna Base Camp is one of the most popular and stunning trekking destinations in Nepal. Located at an altitude of 4130 meters, it offers a jaw-dropping 360-degree view of the Himalayas that surrounds you like a giant snowy amphitheatre.

From the base camp, you can see most of the most majestic peaks in the Annapurna Range, including Annapurna I (8,091 meters), the 10th highest mountain in the world, along with Annapurna South, Hinchuli, Machapuchrey, Gangapurna, and Tent Peak.  Right in front of you, you can see the Annapurna Glacier.

One of the most special things about this place is Machapuchre, also known as the holy mountain. It is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, and climbing is not allowed. Its sharp fishtail shape stands proudly in the skyline and looks even more magical during sunrise and sunset.

There are several routes to ABC. The classic one goes through Ghorepani and Poonhill, while a shorter and more direct route starts from Jhinu Danda or Chomrong. Some trekkers also combine ABC with the Mardi Himal or Annapurna Circuit trek for a longer adventure.

How does Annapurna Poon Hill Trek differ from other Trek in Annapurna Region

The Annapurna Poon Hill Trek stands out as one of the most accessible and rewarding short treks in the Annapurna region. It is unique because, unlike many high-altitude treks, this route takes you to a relatively low elevation, just 3,219 meters at Ponn Hill, yet offers some of the most jaw-dropping sunrise views in the Himalayas. From the summit, you are treated to a golden panorama of giants like Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Machhapucchre, and Hiunchuli without battling altitude sickness or extreme cold.

It’s often called the “short and sweet” trek for good reason. In 4 to 5 days, you can experience lush rhododendron forests, terraced farmlands, charming Gurung villages like Ghandruk and Tadapani, and vibrant local culture. This makes it ideal for those with limited time or looking for a beginner-friendly Himalayan experience.

Another big plus? The poon hill trek is doable for nearly all age groups, from active children to seniors in decent health. The well-established trail, comfortable teahouses, and moderate altitude make it a perfect family trek or even a solo journey for those looking to immerse themselves in nature and Nepali hospitality.

Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill Route Map & Important Landmark

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek via Poon Hill is a scenic and rewarding route that combines two of Nepal’s most iconic trekking experiences. Starting from Nayapul, the trail winds through charming villages like Tikhedhunga, Ghorepani, and Tadapani, leading you up to the famed Poon Hill viewpoint (3,210m). This is a major highlight of the journey, offering a breathtaking sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. From there, the trail gradually climbs through dense forest, terraced fields, and river valleys toward Chhomrong and into the heart of Annapurna Sanctuary.

As you gain elevation, the landscapes change dramatically from lush greenery to alpine terrain, eventually reaching the Annapurna base camp at 4,130 meters. Each day brings a steady ascent, with the route offering plenty of teahouse stops for rest and acclimatization.

Authentic Gurung and Magar culture and villages

One of the most heart-warming parts of the journey to the Annapurna Region is getting to experience the authentic culture of the Gurung and Magar Communities.

As you walk through beautiful villages like Ghandruk, Chhomorong, Landruk, Tadapani, and Jhinu Danda, you will notice traditional stone houses, neatly kept gardens, and warm smiles of locals who are always ready for a friendly ‘Namaste’.

Their culture is rich in music, dance, and festivals. If you are lucky, you will witness a traditional Rodhi Ghar Performance, where villagers sing and dance together in the evening. They also follow a mix of the Buddhist tradition, and you will often find prayer flags, small stupas, and monasteries along the trails.

How Challenging is the Annapurna Base Camp Via Poon Hill Hike of 12 Days

The Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill is considered moderately challenging which means it is manageable for this,  with average physical fitness. It's not an extreme trek, but it’s definitely not a walk in the park either. It has its own set of challenges. The trail will test your legs at times, but also reward you with an incredible mountain view, lush forest, and beautiful villages every step of the way.

You don't need any technical skills. However, you must be prepared to walk for long days,  steep stone steps, and changing terrain. The combination of altitude, distance, and daily elevation gain is what makes it moderately challenging, but with the right mindset and physical stamina, it is doable.

Ascending and Descending parts of the Trail

Literally, be ready for lots of ups and downs! This hike involves a good mix of both ascents and descents throughout the journey. One of the most talked-about parts is the climb to Ulleri. This climb has hundreds of stone steps that will give your thighs a good workout right in the beginning.

But that is just a start. Most of the trails wind up and down through the valley, forests, and river crossings. Even on the way down from Annapurna Base Camp, you will find yourself climbing again in places like Chomrong. It literally might feel like a roller coaster.

In order to enjoy this trek and reduce body strain, it's a good idea to do some physical preparation before your trip. You don't need to train like a mountaineer, but a few weeks of walking, stair climbing, jogging, or light hiking will make a big difference. Most importantly, listen to your body, go at your own pace, and take breaks when needed.
