Annapurna Circuit Trek: difficulty and altitude sickness

Annapurna Circuit Trek is a popular and iconic trekking destination in Nepal, known for its dramatic landscape, diversity of flora and fauna, and rich cultural experience. At the same time, the difficulty of trekking and the risk of altitude sickness are equally challenging.

Terrain: Rich by nature, the Annapurna Circuit trek leads you through low-level rhododendron forests, waterfalls, beautiful meadows, apple farms, and vibrant hills to rugged, rocky, and uneven trails in the high Himalayas. Every 5–6 hours of walking along steep ascent and descents could be challenging for beginners. Besides the adorable Himalayan vista, Thorong La (5,416 m) (the highest pass in Nepal), Muktinath (a pilgrimage place), crossing over the suspension bridge many times and again, and a variety of flora and fauna are equally encouraging for them to complete it.

Elevation and Altitude Sickness: The Annapurna Circuit Budget Trek starts from Chame, which is located at an altitude of 2,610 meters above sea level. Each day, gaining altitude is prompt during the entire trip, and the maximum elevation you will be reaching is 5416 m, which is Thorong La Pass.

Altitude sickness is a disease that is caused by the rapid gain of altitude; it is also called acute mountain sickness (AMS). As the elevation gets higher, the layer of oxygen becomes thinner, and a person cannot get enough oxygen. As a result, there are chances of getting altitude problems. If we compare Annapurna Circuit with Everest Base Camp, the circuit has very few cases of altitude sickness.

The symptoms of altitude sickness that can be seen are headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, tiredness and fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, etc. Garlic soup and hot drinks are recommended at high altitudes to prevent altitude sickness.

  • Fantastic guide-Karan

We had a great time trekking through the Himalayas. Everything was taken care of. We didn't have to worry about anything. Our guide Karan Gurung was amazing. Such an experienced guide. We always felt safe and also had a lot of fun while trekking. We were so glad to have Karan, our dedicated guide and Taran Gurung, our very strong porter with us. Especially on the way to Tilicho lake with the landslide areas. Everything was tailored and flexible to our preferences before and during the trek. In the teahouses during the trek we also didn't have to worry about anything. Karan and Taran made sure we had the nicest rooms and best experiences in the mountains. We enjoyed the company and also our own spare time. I have celiac disease, so I eat glutenfree. Anytime we had food, Karan made sure to communicate it well with the kitchen. Even with my weird request with egg with bananas. We were blown away by the beautiful nature of Nepal as well as the variety which you encounter on the Annapurna Circuit. Each day was a different experience altogether. We did Poonhill as a beautiful end to the trek. In April the Rhododendrons were absolutely gorgeous. We did our trek end of March/start of April.
