Follow an uncrowded trekking route and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the region."

The Mardi Himal trekking route was opened in 2012. The trail is located east of the famous Annapurna base camp trek. The Mardi Himal trek 9 days takes you to the base of Mardi Himal, following an offbeat course via dense forest and remote settlements. As the Mardi Himal is a short trek in the Annapurna region, it is perfect for travelers looking for a quick adventure in the mountains of Nepal.

The trail traverses along narrow, winding paths, leading trekkers through lush rhododendron, pine, maple, oak, and fir forests. As you ascend, around the elevation of 3,300 meters, the trail emerges from the dense forest and opens up to a breathtaking ocean of hills and mountains. The final ascent of the trail follows a steep ridge side and gradually ascends to the Mardi base camp.

The terrain becomes rugged and steep as it ascends, unveiling breathtaking vistas of Mardi Himal (5,587 m/8,330 ft), Annapurna I (8,091 m/26,545 ft), Annapurna South (7,219 m/23,684 ft), Hiunchuli (6,441 m/21,132 ft), Fishtail (6,993 m/22,943 ft), Nilgiri (7,061 m/23,166 ft), etc. While trekking through the forests, you will get to witness mountains every now and then, peeking above the tall trees. The landscapes vary from the starting point of the trail to the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m/14,764 ft).

Also known as the Mardi Himal Base Camp trek, it is one of the finest treks in Nepal that combines both adventure and cultural experience without requiring to spend a long time. The locals along the trekking routes are friendly and welcoming. Their unique and simple mountain lifestyle is fascinating. You will get to learn about their culture and traditions too.

As the Mardi Himal trek is a beginner-friendly trek, anyone can join this trek. You only have to be prepared properly. Our expert team will help you with that. You can also do this trek with your family and friends. The trail has just the right amount of offbeat paths, enough to quench your adventure thirst. Mardi Himal trek difficulty & preparation

The Mardi Himal trek does not require an exceptionally high level of fitness, but a moderate level of fitness is recommended. While there is no direct climbing involved, it is important to note that trekkers will encounter some rocky sections near the high camp and base camp.

To estimate the required level of fitness for the Mardi Himal trek, it is important to consider the duration of the trek. The Mardi Himal trek distance is approximately 44 kilometers (27 miles). Most trekking days involve approximately 5-7 hours of slow hiking. The trail is quite isolated and not established. The altitude goes up to 4,500 meters (14,764 ft).

Regular walks will help you a lot to prepare for the trek. Keep movement in your body and do activities like jogging, running, hiking, cycling, swimming, etc. All these cardio activities will build your stamina and endurance. If you exercise, train your leg muscles and core strength.

By preparing physically and seeking medical advice beforehand, trekkers can optimize their overall trekking experience and minimize the risks associated with altitude and physical exertion.

*Note: If you plan to complete the trek in 4-5 days, which is feasible, it is essential to have a reasonable level of fitness to comfortably handle the daily hiking duration. Get in touch with us to customize the itinerary to make it shorter.

  • Great team for Nepal trekking

Our group of 4pax was properly taken care by guide Karan and porters Taran & Emmanuel for the 5-day Mardi Himal trek. Despite some wet weather at the beginning, Karan kept our spirits high, and as a group, we all reached Mardi Himal viewpoint for an amazing sunrise across the Annapurna South mountain range. Karan was patient also, as one of our trekking buddies is more senior at 68 years old and managed our trekking speed accordingly.

Useful Information

Mardi Himal trek best time

The best time to go trekking in Nepal depends on the climate and weather conditions. Mid-September to November is the Autumn season, which is considered the peak and optimal time for trekking. The weather is generally clear, and the views are spectacular. Another favorable period for trekking is from March to May, during the Spring season, when the valleys come alive with blooming flowers and lush greenery.

December to February bring cold temperatures, and there is a possibility of trails being closed due to snowfall. Although the skies are clear during this time, be prepared for the cold and plan accordingly. Heavy snowfall may also disrupt the journey, and the lodges may not be open at higher elevations. If you wish to do Himal trek in winter, get in touch with us.

May to June mark the hot pre-monsoon season, where temperatures get quite warm. However, this period offers the beauty of blooming flowers and teeming vegetation. It can still be a suitable time for trekking, but you have to be prepared for the heat and sudden downpours.

From June to mid-September, Nepal experiences the monsoon season, which is generally the least preferred time for trekking. During this time, the risk of heavy downpours and leeches increases significantly, particularly in forested areas like Mardi Himal. We recommended wearing long trekking trousers tucked in and carrying leech/mosquito repellent spray.

Considering the different seasons and their associated conditions is essential when planning a trekking adventure in Nepal. By choosing the right time, you can maximize your safety, comfort, and overall enjoyment of the journey. We Nature Excursion organize the Mardi Himal trek in all seasons as per our guest's wishes. However, if we have to choose the perfect time to do this trek, we will pick spring and autumn when everything is just right, from weather to climate conditions.

Travel visa

Acquiring a travel visa for Nepal is a straightforward and efficient process. Upon your arrival at any entry point, including the Tribhuvan International Airport, you can easily obtain an on-arrival travel visa. The duration of the visa will vary depending on the purpose of your visit, ranging from 15 to 90 days.

To obtain the visa, you will need to complete a visa application form and provide a passport-sized photograph, a valid passport, and the visa fee in US dollars or other convertible currency. The visa fee is determined based on your nationality and the length of your intended stay.

Please note that citizens of certain countries, such as Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Iraq, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan, are not eligible for an on-arrival visa. Therefore, check your visa requirements before departing from your home country to ensure a smooth entry into Nepal.

There are designated areas where you can charge your electronic devices by paying a small amount. We recommend carrying a power bank or spare battery as a backup.
  • Communication/Internet: Given that the Mardi Himal trek takes you through remote areas with dense forests and mountains, network reliability can be unpredictable. However, please note that network stability may vary, and there may be stretches of the trail with no connectivity.

Each trekker is allowed a weight limit of 10 kg. Additionally, you can carry a daypack to keep your essentials readily accessible.
  • Tip: Tipping is customary in Nepali travel culture and is not included in our Mardi Himal trek costs. We suggest tipping our on-field crew, such as tour guides, drivers, trek guides, and porters, based on your satisfaction with their service. If trekking as a group, you can collectively gather a small amount for tipping purposes.
  • Travel Insurance: Travel insurance is necessary while traveling in the Himalayas of Nepal. It provides immediate medical assistance in case of emergencies. Travel insurance for the Mardi Himal trek should cover emergency air evacuation and medical expenses. This acts as a safety net for both you and us during unforeseen circumstances.
  • ATM: Please note that there are no ATMs available on the Mardi Himal trail. Withdraw Nepali rupees in Kathmandu or Pokhara before embarking on the trek. You should have some cash on hand for personal expenses such as charging, WiFi, snacks, and hot showers during the trek.
